What our residential care involves

We provide 24-hour residential care for people aged 65 and over, including married couples and partners who wish to stay together. Our qualified carers are close by day and night, offering as much or as little support as each person needs, from a little help to stay independent through to more hands-on assistance with daily living. Everything we do is guided by dignity, kindness and respect, whether that is help with personal care and medication, a warm meal, a chat in the garden or support getting to an appointment.

Residential care or nursing care?

Families often arrive unsure which of the two they need, so here is the difference in plain terms. Residential care means support with everyday life, washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and companionship, provided by trained carers. Nursing care means the same daily support plus registered nurses on duty at all times, for people with ongoing clinical needs. Many people never need that second level. Crossways is registered as a [residential care home], and district nurses and GPs visit our residents here just as they would in anyone's own home. Living with memory loss

Many of the people we care for have some degree of memory loss, and we support residents with early to moderate dementia. A small home with a consistent, familiar team often suits people with dementia particularly well, because faces and routines stay the same from one day to the next. A true home, not just a care home

Crossways is set in a welcoming detached house with a secure, well-kept garden and a summer house to enjoy in the warmer months. Our rooms are individually decorated, and we encourage residents to bring their own furniture and personal possessions so their room feels like home from the very first day. Many rooms have ensuite facilities, and there is a lift and a chair lift for easy access throughout the building.

Day-to-day life is shaped around the individual. Residents get up when they wake rather than when a rota says so, and go to bed when they are ready. Some like breakfast early and a walk in the garden, others prefer a slow start with the paper. 

Our activities coordinator (Jackie and Sara) arranges a varied programme to keep residents stimulated in body and mind, from gentle exercise and quizzes to music, crafts, baking and visiting entertainers, and nobody is obliged to join in. Our head chef (Glenn) prepares fresh, home-cooked meals on the premises every day, with a choice at each meal and dietary needs happily catered for. Family and friends are always welcome to visit and are very welcome to join a loved one for a meal.

What it costs

Our residential fees start at £1400 per week, agreed with you in writing before anyone moves in, and cover the room, all meals, laundry, housekeeping, activities and the care itself. Residential care in England is means-tested, and how much you pay depends on savings, income and property.
