Referral criteria
Who we can take, and who we cannot
We would rather say no quickly than tie up a bed day with an assessment that was never going to work. If someone falls outside this, ring us anyway and we will point you somewhere better.
We can usually help with
- Older people aged 65 and over needing help with personal care day to day
- Residents living with dementia whose needs can be met in a residential setting
- Discharge to assess and short-stay placements while longer term needs are worked out
- Planned respite, and recovery stays after a hospital admission
- People funded privately, by the local authority, or through a third party top up

Our approach to care
A family run home, not a placement
Crossways is a 25 bed residential home in Lindfield. It is small on purpose. The team know every resident by name, their history and what a good day looks like for them, which is what makes a move from hospital settle quickly rather than slowly.
Every referral starts with a proper assessment, on the ward where that helps. We would rather turn a placement down at that point than accept someone whose needs we cannot meet and move them again a few weeks later. That is worse for the person and worse for you.
Once someone arrives, the first days are planned around them: the routine they are used to, the food they like, the people they want to see. Families are welcome without appointment.
What happens after you refer
- 1We read the referralWe check straight away whether we can meet the person's needs, and tell you honestly if we cannot.
- 2We assessThe home manager, or a senior member of the team, carries out a pre-admission assessment. We can do this on the ward.
- 3We confirm the room and the feeYou get a clear written answer on availability and cost, including any third party contribution.
- 4We agree a dateWe work to the ward's timetable, and we will say plainly if we need longer to prepare.

Funding
Funding routes we accept
We take privately funded and local authority funded placements. The exact fee is always confirmed in writing after assessment, so a referral gets a real number rather than a range.
Local authority funded
We work with West Sussex County Council and neighbouring authorities. Where the authority rate sits below our fee, a third party contribution may be needed and we will set that out in writing before admission.
Local council fundingSelf funded
Guide fees are £1,400 to £1,600 per week. The exact fee is always confirmed after assessment, so a referral gets a real number rather than a range.
Fees and fundingAttendance Allowance and benefits
Many residents are entitled to Attendance Allowance and do not claim it. Our checker takes two minutes and we are happy to help a family through it.

Where a placement depends on a property sale, a deferred payment agreement with the local authority can bridge it. Our calculator shows how that works.

What families say
From the people who know us
Our mother lived at Crossways Residential Care Home very happily for almost four years. She went in for respite care but felt so at home, she decided to stay. The staff are wonderful - kind, compassionate and very professional, actively cultivating a warm, family-style atmosphere. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them in looking after Mum's needs and we were very happy knowing that she was so safe and so well cared for by people we trusted. There were activities every day, good food, and a beautiful garden to relax in during the summer. The manager and activities co-ordinator actively encouraged Mum's interest in art - and some of her paintings still hang on the walls there, a touching reminder that each resident is loved, valued and fondly remembered. Crossways is excellently well run, with excellent communication between staff and family members. We are so grateful to the Crossways manager and his team for making Mum's final years so happy and contented.
Review from Carole T, Daughter of Resident
I cannot recommend Crossways highly enough. The amazing team are led from the front by an equally amazing manager who is just as likely to be seen assisting the residents or serving meals as sat in an office. The staff are courteous, kind and always smiling, and the activities coordinator always has great ideas to encourage people to participate, whether that's painting, exercises or a quiz. The food is good and plentiful and there's always a cup of tea going! We are so glad to have found Crossways for our lovely Mum.
Review from Sarah M, Daughter of Resident
Mum has been at Crossways for over 5 years, the care is excellent and the staff very supportive, professional and friendly. The environment is very welcoming and we feel reassured that she is being well looked after. The manager and team communicate very well to keep us informed. Overall we are very happy and would recommend.

Questions from referrers
The things we get asked most
Do you take discharge to assess placements?
Yes. We take short stay and discharge to assess placements while longer term needs are worked out, subject to a pre-admission assessment and a room being available.
Do you provide nursing care?
No. Crossways is a residential care home, so we do not have registered nurses on site. Our sister home, Ferndale Nursing Home in Crawley, is registered for nursing care and takes referrals directly.
Can you assess on the ward?
Yes. The home manager or a senior member of the team can carry out a pre-admission assessment on the ward, and we would usually rather do that than rely on paperwork alone.
Do you accept local authority funded placements?
Yes. Where the authority rate sits below our fee a third party contribution may be needed. We set that out in writing before admission so there is no surprise later.
How quickly can someone move in?
It depends on the assessment and on the room. Once we have assessed and confirmed the fee we work to the ward's timetable, and we will tell you plainly if we need longer to prepare.
What information should a referral include?
A current assessment of needs, any moving and handling or falls information, a medication list, and the funding route. If something is missing we will ask rather than delay.
Do you take residents living with dementia?
Yes, where their needs can be met in a residential setting. If someone needs nursing or a specialist dementia nursing unit we will say so at the assessment rather than accept a placement we cannot sustain.
Who should I speak to about a placement?
Ask for the home manager, Selvarajen “Kelvin” Amoorthasamy. The office is open Monday to Thursday, 8am–1pm, and outside those hours you can leave a message or email enquiries@crosswayscarehome.co.uk.
