We have 25 beds and a settled, qualified staff group who take the time to understand each person's routines, preferences and needs, even for a short stay, so your relative feels comfortable rather than simply looked after.

What a respite stay involves

A respite stay is a short stay in our home with the same care our permanent residents receive. That means an individually decorated room, all meals freshly cooked here on site, laundry, housekeeping and the full programme of daily activities, with qualified carers close by day and night. Support is shaped around the person, from a little help staying independent through to more hands-on assistance with washing, dressing, mobility and medication. There is very little to pack; most people bring clothes, toiletries, and a few photographs or personal things to make the room feel their own.

How long a stay can be

Our minimum stay is two weeks, and most people stay somewhere between one and four weeks, though we can often be flexible, and there is no maximum. If a stay needs extending because someone is recovering more slowly than expected, that is very rarely a problem. Just talk to us. We can usually arrange a stay within a few days, and sometimes sooner if a carer has been taken ill or a hospital discharge has come round quickly.

Paying for respite care

Our respite fees start at £1600 per week, agreed with you in writing before the stay begins, and cover the room, all meals, laundry, housekeeping, activities and the care itself. Many families pay privately, but it is always worth asking whether help is available. West Sussex County Council can arrange and part-fund respite following a needs assessment and a financial assessment, and the NHS funds care in some circumstances.

It gives both of you the chance to experience our home, our team and our daily routines before making any longer-term decisions. Some stays end there, some turn into something more permanent, and either outcome is a useful answer.
