A Wild and Wonderful Visit from Snakes and Critters at Crossways Care Home

By Len Burgess

At Crossways Care Home, we are always looking for new and exciting ways to create memorable experiences for our residents, and recently, we welcomed some very unusual visitors that certainly brought a sense of adventure into the home.

In a visit that was both fascinating and full of fun, a specialist animal handling team brought along a variety of snakes and exotic critters for residents to meet up close. It’s safe to say this was not your typical day at Crossways, but it quickly turned into an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

From the moment the animals arrived, there was a real buzz around the home. Residents gathered with curiosity and excitement, eager to see these incredible creatures. For many, it was something completely new, while others were reminded of past experiences or interests they hadn’t thought about in years.

The team introduced each animal one by one, sharing interesting facts and stories about them. Residents learned about where the animals come from, what they eat, and how they behave in the wild. It was not only entertaining but also educational, sparking conversations and questions throughout the session.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for residents to interact with the animals. For those who felt comfortable, there was the chance to gently touch or even hold some of the smaller creatures under the careful supervision of the handlers. Watching residents’ reactions was truly special, from initial surprise to smiles, laughter, and even a sense of pride after stepping outside their comfort zone.

The snakes, in particular, captured a lot of attention. While some residents were understandably cautious at first, many became more relaxed as they learned more about them. Seeing a snake up close, feeling its smooth movement, and realising how calm and gentle it could be was a completely new experience for many.

What made the day so unique was the mix of emotions it brought out. There was excitement, curiosity, a little bit of nervousness, and ultimately, a great sense of enjoyment. It encouraged residents to try something different, engage with one another, and share in a truly unusual activity.

Events like this are a fantastic way to stimulate the senses and create meaningful moments. The visit from the snakes and critters provided a different kind of engagement, one that sparked conversation long after the animals had left. Residents continued to talk about their favourite moments, the animals they liked most, and the experience of doing something they never expected.

At Crossways Care Home, we believe that life should be full of new experiences, no matter your age. This visit was a perfect example of how trying something a little out of the ordinary can bring joy, confidence, and a sense of achievement.

As the day came to an end, there were plenty of smiles and stories to share. It was a truly wild and wonderful experience, and one that will be remembered fondly by residents and staff alike.
