On Thursday, 2^nd June 2022, the team at Crossways held a Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea Party for our residents.

We were very lucky, and the weather stayed warm and sunny, so we were able to spend the afternoon out in the garden. We had decorated the gazebo with bunting, streamers and balloons and the residents wore the Crowns they had made and decorated for the occasion and waved their flags. Everyone toasted the Queen’s 70 years on the Throne with a glass of bubbly.

During the afternoon we chatted to the residents about their memories of the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 and many of our residents had a lovely time reminiscing and remembering the day the Queen was crowned.

Queen Elizabeth’s Father

One of our residents spoke for everyone when they said the Queen has been marvellous and has served the Country so well without “putting a foot wrong”. We talked about King George VI, Queen Elizabeth’s father, and some of our residents said they remembered him being on the Throne before Queen Elizabeth.

We had music playing all afternoon including songs by Elvis Presley, Lonnie Donegan, Doris Day and Vera Lynn we also asked for requests and some of the suggestions included Doing the Lambeth Walk, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and That’s Amore.

We had a mix of songs from the fifties, sixties and seventies and everyone joined in – singing along, waving their flags and many holding hands with their fellow residents. A few of our more energetic residents had a dance with staff too!

Traditional Afternoon Tea Party

Everyone enjoyed their traditional afternoon tea party – with sandwiches, rolls, sausage rolls and other nibbles and then scones with jam and cream and cakes followed by tea and coffee.

I think, like so many people around the country, everyone had a lovely afternoon reminiscing about the Queen and her family and celebrating her 70 magnificent years of reign.
